Worried about prostate cancer: where I would put my effort.

If a supplement caught my eye while I was worried about prostate cancer, I would first want to know whether the evidence showed it could prevent cancer and what risks it carried. Then I would decide whether to use it.

SELECT did not find that selenium or vitamin E supplements prevented prostate cancer; the high-dose vitamin E-only group had more diagnoses. I would not add those to prevent prostate cancer. A lower PSA after a product would not prove it prevented or treated cancer, either.

My practical start: photograph supplement labels, note amounts and frequency for a doctor or pharmacist to check against treatment, and put follow-up dates on my calendar. During cancer care, I would agree with my team on activity suited to my health and stamina, perhaps setting aside time for a manageable walk and adjusting from there. Appropriate exercise can support function and quality of life.

If worry were disrupting my eating or sleep, I would say so and ask for support. I would want care for the number and for the person who still has to live an ordinary day.
