Blood sugar matters. So does a meal I enjoy.

If I needed to work on blood sugar, I would start with the rice bowl I actually eat. A lovely plan still has to make it through an ordinary dinner.

I would photograph a usual meal, including the drink, and review portions, vegetables, protein and carbohydrates with my doctor or dietitian. Carbohydrates affect blood sugar; my medicines and health needs also matter.

I would choose one manageable change, perhaps water instead of a sugary drink, or a better balance of vegetables and protein. I would agree on carbohydrate portions with the team instead of suddenly removing all starch or changing medicine myself.

At follow-up I would bring what I actually managed, so we could adjust. I would want a way of eating I could keep, not a menu that only looks good on the refrigerator.
